Once tomatoes are large enough to develop mature seed, you can separate them from the fruit flesh.

These fermenting tomato seeds are starting to bubble and drop to the bottom of the bowl. In another 1 or 2 days they’ll be ready to dry and store.

I use paper seed packets with my own labels, so I remember what I’ve stored and when it was harvested. Gifting seeds you collected, or trading them with your friends and family, is fun and rewarding.

I seeded the same variety of lettuce in all these seed plugs . . . but the seeds were 3 or 4 years old. Only about 50 percent of the seeds germinated. The rest were no longer viable.
